Time tracking for field service companies

Time tracking for service techs with five stops before lunch.

Field service technician time tracking has to split a tech's day into customer stops and the driving between them. ZeroBadge gives each tech a company-managed badge. Power on and the shift starts. Each report is placed at the customer site, shop or supply house you've drawn, and the drives show on their own lines. The office sees who is on shift and where.

  • Drive time and site time split
  • No app on the tech's phone
  • One month or more of battery life*

*Under qualifying operating conditions. Battery life varies with reporting frequency, signal conditions, usage, and configuration.

What ZeroBadge does for you

How ZeroBadge helps Field Services

One company badge per worker covers safety alerts, timekeeping, labor analytics and ZeroBadge AI. Here is what each part does in your line of work.

  • 01

    Worker safety

A technician alone at a customer site can press the alert button, and the office sees which stop it came from.

    Learn more
  • 02

    Workforce management

See on the live map who is on shift and where, and which technician is late to the first stop of the day.

    Learn more
  • 03

    Automated timekeeping

Badge on starts the day, and each customer stop and drive is recorded within one shift, with no personal phone involved.

    Learn more
  • 04

    Workforce productivity

Compare time on site with drive time across routes, and see which customers or routes take longer than planned.

    Learn more
  • 05

    Location analytics

Each regular customer site is a drawn location, so the record separates time at the customer from time in the truck.

  • 06

    Field logistics

Balance routes across technicians using recorded stop times and drive time, then plan tomorrow's dispatch in your own software.

  • 07

    AI advisory and analytics

Ask ZeroBadge AI how much of last week was drive time against time on site for each route.

Safety alerts support your safety program. They do not replace supervision or training, ZeroBadge does not monitor alerts or contact 911, and in an emergency workers should call 911.

Where service hours disappear

The work order says forty minutes on site. The day says otherwise.

HVAC service, telecom, facilities and equipment service companies all run techs on routes. Their days are short stops with driving in between.

  • Drive time folded into site time

A tech writes down the start and end of the day. The split between driving and work on site is a guess.

  • Stops that never reach the timecard

A quick callback or a parts pickup between jobs is paid time. It rarely gets its own line.

  • The office can't see the field

A customer calls asking when the tech will arrive. The office rings around to find out who is closest.

  • Apps on personal phones

Techs forget to tap in, or their phone dies by mid-afternoon. The record has gaps the office fills by hand.

One tech, one day

Each stop and each drive gets its own line on one shift.

The example company here is a construction contractor. The record works the same way at a customer site. One shift per worker, split by every location the badge was placed at.

Draw the customer sites you visit often, plus the shop and your parts suppliers. Time at each stop, the drive between them and any stop at a place you haven't drawn all come out as separate lines.

Across the whole team

See how each tech's week split across sites and the road.

For every worker who recorded time at more than one location, the week is split by site, with transit totals and moves between sites.

That is the number behind questions about route length and drive time. The live map shows where each tech is right now. ZeroBadge doesn't dispatch jobs or plan routes, so keep your dispatch tool.

On the route

What your service managers and dispatchers will ask.

  • Customer sites

Draw each regular customer as a location by typing its address. A stop at a site you haven't drawn still shows on the shift, as time away from your drawn locations.

  • Drive time

Movement between locations is recorded as transit, apart from time on site. It counts as paid time on the timesheet.

  • Who is where

The live map shows each tech who is on shift, their last reported position and battery level.

  • After-hours calls

A call that runs past midnight splits at midnight without losing minutes. Each day keeps its own hours.

Ask about routes and stops

Ask in everyday words and get answers from your own badge records, with each number linking to the stops behind it.

  • You ask

How much of last week was drive time compared with time at customers?

Route 4 recorded 14 hours driving and 24 at customers, and Route 7 recorded 11 and 27. Each total links to the daily stops.

  • You ask

Which technicians are on shift right now and where?

Six technicians are on shift: four at customer sites including Delta Foods and Ridge Telecom, and two between stops. The live map shows each badge's last position.

  • You ask

How long did Carlos spend at the Delta Foods site on the 9th?

Carlos was recorded at Delta Foods from 8:41 AM to 11:26 AM, 2 hours 45 minutes. The visit links to its location readings.

Answers come only from your company's own records. Every number links to the records behind it. Read-only; admins control access.

How ZeroBadge AI works

Questions

Questions field service companies ask.

How does ZeroBadge separate drive time from time on site?
Each customer site you draw is a location. Time inside a location is on site. Movement between locations is transit. Both show as separate lines on the tech's shift and in reports.
Do I have to draw every customer site?
Draw the sites you visit often. A stop somewhere you haven't drawn still appears on the shift as time away from your drawn locations, so the office can review it.
Can dispatch see where techs are?
Yes. The live map shows each tech on shift with their last reported position. ZeroBadge doesn't assign jobs or plan routes, so it works beside your dispatch software.
Does each tech need a phone or an app?
No. The badge has its own cellular connection. Nothing to install, and nothing stops working when a phone battery dies. More in time tracking without phones.
How do approved hours reach payroll?
The office reviews the period's timesheets and approves them. Approved hours are sent to your payroll provider automatically. See payroll integration.
