A busybusy alternative when you only need labor hours

If you track equipment hours, fuel and operators alongside labor, busybusy fits, and it lists a free plan to start. If you only need crew hours by jobsite and do not want those hours to depend on workers' phones, consider ZeroBadge. Each worker wears a company badge with its own cellular connection, and the office reviews a week already split by jobsite and transit.

What busybusy does well

busybusy's strength is tracking people and machines in one place. Its site shows employees, equipment and projects on one live GPS map, with equipment location, machine hours, operator efficiency and service report stats.

  • Job costing with five filters. Costs can be filtered by project, employee, cost code, equipment and date.
  • Daily project reports. Reports can include who was on site, hours, weather, photos and equipment, with photos stamped with GPS, time and project.
  • Buddy-clocking alerts. busybusy says facial recognition notifies the office when someone clocks in for another person.
  • Low cost to try. busybusy calls itself a free GPS time tracking app, lists Free, Pro and Premium plans, and offers a 14-day trial with no card.

How busybusy captures time

busybusy captures time from phones and shared devices. Workers clock in from their own phones; a supervisor can clock in a whole crew or one worker and assign each person a cost code, project and equipment; and a kiosk mode lets workers punch at a shared device while crew leads handle job costing and breaks.

Location settings shape the punch. busybusy offers location reminders when a worker arrives at or leaves a site, breadcrumb location history, and a Required Onsite setting that blocks a clock-in when the worker is outside the project boundaries. It also lists an Offline Mode that works regardless of cell range.

Where ZeroBadge differs from busybusy

busybusy decides at the punch whether a worker may clock in. ZeroBadge does not block anything: it records where the badge was all shift and sorts the time afterward, so a manager sees the day as it happened.

A start at the supply house

6:30 a.m.
Foreman sends an apprentice to the supply house to pick up fittings before the jobsite
With a clock-in block at project boundaries
The apprentice cannot clock in at the supply house unless it is set up as a project, so the punch waits until the jobsite
With ZeroBadge
The badge is on from 6:30 a.m.; the stop shows as time outside approved sites, or as its own location if you drew the supply house
7:20 a.m.
Apprentice arrives at the jobsite; ZeroBadge logs the arrival inside the same shift
What the office sees
50 minutes of paid supply-house time on the record, flagged for review instead of missing

How you pay that time is your policy. The point is that it is on the record to decide.

ZeroBadge does not track equipment. If machine hours drive your job costing, that is a real gap, not a footnote.

A simple rule for choosing

Pick by what you need to measure, then by who carries the device.

You bill or cost equipment hours
busybusy, since ZeroBadge has no equipment tracking.
You need daily reports with photos from the field
busybusy, or another daily-report tool.
You need crew hours by jobsite and workers will not run an app
ZeroBadge.
You need both, on different people
You can keep a phone app for foremen and operators and give badges to the rest of the crew. The two do not connect, so decide which one feeds payroll.

No. ZeroBadge badges are worn by workers and record their shifts. It has no equipment hours, fuel or service tracking.
