A SmartBarrel alternative for crews that do not stay at one gate

If you want proof of who clocked in, with a face check at a weatherproof site clock or shared tablet, SmartBarrel fits, especially on large single sites. If your crews work several jobsites a day and you care more about where time went between the punches, consider ZeroBadge. Each worker wears a company badge that reports about every 5 minutes from power on to power off.

What SmartBarrel does well

SmartBarrel is built to settle who actually clocked in. Its site says each clock-in photo is compared against earlier photos to confirm identity, and that this works with hard hats and safety glasses.

  • Self-contained site hardware. TimeClock 4.0 is portable, weatherproof, magnetic and IP65-rated, runs on AC, solar or battery, and connects over LTE with no Wi-Fi.
  • Several ways to start the punch. Workers enter a phone number or use a fob or RFID badge, each with facial verification.
  • Confirmation to the worker. SmartBarrel's app sends a time-stamped text after each punch, in the worker's preferred language.
  • Construction controls around time. Cost codes assigned with one tap, split shifts by task, rounding, break and overtime rules, an audit log of edits, and daily logs with weather and headcount.
  • Built for large labor pools. It names union, non-union and temp labor among the crews it serves, and lists integrations with construction ERP and project tools.

How SmartBarrel captures time

SmartBarrel captures a verified punch at a point of entry. The TimeClock sits at the site; in kiosk mode a phone or tablet becomes a shared check-in station where workers scan their faces; in personal app mode a solo worker clocks in on their own phone. Geofences around each project mean a worker can clock in only when on site, and the app keeps running offline and syncs later.

What a punch proves and what a badge record proves

A verified punch proves who was at the clock at two moments. A badge record shows where the badge was across the shift. They answer different questions, so it helps to lay out one day.

A 10-hour day, 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Verified punches at a site clock
2 (in and out), more if you punch lunch
Badge reports at about one every 5 minutes
10 hours x 12 per hour = about 120
Leaves site 10:15 to 11:40 for a second job
Site clock: nothing recorded unless the second job has a clock. Badge: shown as transit, then time at the second jobsite
Is it really this worker?
Site clock: face checked at both punches. Badge: not checked; the badge is assigned to one worker
The trade-off
SmartBarrel is stronger on identity; a badge is stronger on the hours between punches.

Where ZeroBadge differs from SmartBarrel

ZeroBadge records presence for the whole shift without a station at the site. A worker who starts at the shop, runs to a supply house and finishes at a jobsite has one shift record, with each stretch classified on site, in transit or other.

  • No biometrics. ZeroBadge stores no face photos. That removes one source of consent paperwork where biometric privacy laws apply, and it also means ZeroBadge cannot catch a badge handed to someone else.
  • Nothing to place or power at the site. Jobsites are geofences drawn from an address.
  • Indoor and outdoor. GPS outdoors, Wi-Fi positioning indoors once the badge has learned a site, and cellular continuity in between marked low confidence. Accuracy answers which jobsite, not which room.

Frequently asked questions

How does ZeroBadge prevent buddy punching without a face check?
It does not verify faces. Each badge is assigned to one worker, and its record covers the whole shift rather than one moment at a clock, but it cannot tell who is wearing it. If you must prove identity at each punch, a face-check clock does that better. See preventing buddy punching.
Can we keep SmartBarrel at one big site and use badges elsewhere?
Yes. You can split by site type: a gate clock on the large job, badges for crews that move. The two systems do not connect, so decide which feeds payroll for each crew.
Do workers need phones with ZeroBadge, as with SmartBarrel's personal app mode?
No. The badge has its own cellular connection and never uses the worker's phone or data plan.
We have biometric consent forms for SmartBarrel. Do we need them for ZeroBadge?
ZeroBadge does not collect face photos or other biometrics. You should still tell workers the badge records location during paid shifts. This is general information, not legal advice; check your state's rules.
