A Connecteam alternative for crews that should not need a phone
If you want one employee app for time, scheduling, chat and forms on workers' phones, Connecteam fits, and its free plan covers up to 10 users. If you want hours recorded without any app on a personal phone, split by jobsite and reviewed before payroll, consider ZeroBadge. Each worker wears a company-issued cellular badge: power on starts the shift, power off ends it.

What Connecteam does well
Connecteam is built as a hub for deskless teams, and the time clock is one part of it. Its own site lists scheduling and team chat as separate products in the same app, so a foreman can publish a schedule, message the crew and collect hours without switching tools.
- Geofenced clock-in. Connecteam says you can geofence work areas to avoid early off-site clock-ins and missed clock-outs, and that GPS can clock employees out automatically when they leave the site.
- Live GPS breadcrumbs. It tracks on-the-go teams with breadcrumbs while they are on the clock.
- Shared tablet kiosk. A kiosk app lets a crew clock in and out from one tablet at the workplace.
- Buddy punching checks. Selfie verification and PIN codes are offered at the punch.
- Payroll handoff. Hours can sync with a payroll provider or export as PDF or XLS.
- A free tier. Connecteam describes a small business plan that is free for up to 10 users, and paid Operations Hub plans from $29 a month for the first 30 users.
How Connecteam captures time
Connecteam captures time on a phone or a shared tablet. The worker taps clock in, or a geofence handles the clock-out, and the phone's GPS is stored with the punch. Breadcrumbs come from the same phone while the worker stays on the clock.
That design means the quality of the record follows the phone. Automatic clock-out and breadcrumbs need the app to keep reading location in the background, so a worker who limits location access, runs low on battery or leaves the phone in the truck changes what gets recorded. The kiosk avoids personal phones but puts one tablet at one site, which does not follow a crew to the shop or a second jobsite.
Where ZeroBadge differs
ZeroBadge does one job: record each worker's shift and where it was spent. There is no chat, no schedule builder and no forms. What it changes is the device. The badge is company-owned, has its own cellular connection and needs no app, login or permission from the worker.
- Every reading stores its method. GPS outdoors, Wi-Fi positioning indoors, and cellular continuity in between marked low confidence, so the office can see how sure each placement is.
- One shift across sites. A move from one jobsite to another, or a stop at the supply house, stays inside one shift record split into on site, transit and other time.
- Exceptions instead of scrolling a map. Missing clock-outs, late starts, early finishes and time outside approved sites are listed for the week's review.
- Corrections leave a trail. Nothing is silently edited, and the approved weekly PDF is kept as an unchangeable version.
- Nothing on a personal device. The badge is powered off between shifts and returned when a worker leaves.

A decision rule by crew size
Crew size changes the math more than features do. Connecteam's price is fixed up to 30 users and then adds a per-user charge, and the free plan stops at 10. A badge is one device per worker on the crew, quoted on badge count, office users and term.
- Up to 10 users, everyone has a smartphone
- Connecteam's free plan is hard to argue with. Start there.
- Mixed phones, several jobsites a day
- The phone is the weak link. A badge per worker removes it.
- Foremen run the schedule, crews just work
- Keep an app for the foremen and give the crew badges, so hours do not depend on 30 personal phones.
